Facebook has decided to increase the capacity of it's data center which being built in Oregon, United States (U.S). This action marks the actual quick growth in that social networking site owned by Mark Zuckerberg. Last month, the amount of Facebook users reached 500 million.
In January, Facebook started to construct its initial data center placed in Prineville, Oregon, USA in 147,000 square meters. The facility is scheduled to be completed early next year (2011). Before the whole construction has finished, Facebook decided (again) to increase the data center area to 160,000 square meters.
"In order to meet the needs of our business which continues to grow rapidly, we have decided to continue to the second project at the same time ," said Tom Furlong, Facebook Chief Operating Officer in his official blog.
Furlong says, the launch of the second new development project will be settled after the construction of the data center first phase has been finished. It's scheduled to be done in early 2012. Facebook spends about US$ 200 million for this construction.
However, this plan was opposed by natural activists Greenpeace. Because, to operate the data center, Facebook will takes a lot of electricity power with at least 30 megawatt or the same as 30,000 homes electrical needs. About 58% energy comes from coal power plants owned by Pacific Corp, located in Wyoming and Utah, USA.
Greenpeace will go all out against Facebook to opposing this plan. It's accusing Facebook more likely trying to destroy the earth for using natural energy source too extravagant. This rejection already supported by 8000 people.
The city officials Prineville, Oregon, counter the rejection of Greenpeace. The reason is with such a construction of Facebook data center, more than 200 new jobs opportunities will be open to decrease unemployment people.
Oregon State has a relatively high unemployment, about 16.4% of the population. A while ago in the city, there are five big sawmills, but has been stopped due to law terms on logging to protect the nature
City Prinville carefully selected for construction of Facebook data center since it has a high desert weather and very cold at night, about four degrees Celsius, even in summer. This condition allows server to less likely get heat faster and electrical usage can be reduced.
Facebook itself denied Greenpeace accusation as it claimed the development of data center would be built with green standards and environmentally friendly.
